Sunday’s visit to Breakneck Ridge was challenging, breathtaking, and terrifying. Before going I knew that there would plenty of rock scrambling involved, but I didn’t really understand what that meant until we started climbing the first hill and had to use our hands almost as much as our feet. It wasn’t hiking, and it wasn’t rock climbing, but something in between.
Furqan took tons of amazing pictures, and I posted some of them here.
The views were amazing, watching the hawks fly overhead was great, we encountered a total of 4 people during out entire time there – a benefit of starting a little before 9am. We could see tons of people on the mountain when we finished around noon.
The trail wasn’t too difficult but there were wet, slippery leaves everywhere and that made it fairly dangerous. That’s the downside to going there at the end of fall. Make sure you pick up a map from the little wooden box at the start of the trail. I was in charge of directions and managed to lead us off the planned trail, but the map told us where we were so we took an alternate route back.
If you want to go, just drive to this location and park in either of the lots on your left just after the tunnel. Or you can take the Metro-North Hudson Line train from Grand Central Terminal in New York City to the Breakneck Ridge train station.
